While many South American countries that share natural treasures, Bolivia has its own international claim to fame in the world-famous Uyuni Salt Flats. Originally formed by prehistoric lakes over 4,000-square-miles in size, the Solar de Uyuni forms the largest salt flat on the planet. This geographical oddity is devoid of wildlife or vegetation, but Incahuasi Island is home to giant cacti, and many species of flamingo as well as endemic wildlife like culpeo, vizcacha, and vicuñas can be spotted in the surrounding areas. A stay in the small city of Uyuni adds interest to the journey; many of the hotels are constructed with blocks of salt, and a nearby train cemetery offers homage to the area’s past as a hub for railway engineers in the end of the nineteenth century.
